How VEINOPLUS® compares to other therapies
VEINOPLUS® uses Second Heart Technology™, a proprietary electrical stimulation waveform that activates the calf muscle pump to increase local blood circulation. See how it differs from TENS, pneumatic compression, compression stockings, and other EMS devices.
FDA-Cleared Indications for Use
VEINOPLUS® vs. TENS Units
Both apply electrical stimulation through skin electrodes, but TENS stimulates sensory nerves for temporary pain management, while VEINOPLUS® stimulates the calf muscles themselves.
| VEINOPLUS® | TENS Unit | |
|---|---|---|
| Stimulates | Calf muscles – rhythmic contractions activate the calf muscle pump | Sensory nerves – modulates pain signals during use |
| Purpose | Increasing local blood circulation; post-surgical prevention of venous thrombosis; muscle re-education | Temporary, symptomatic pain management |
| Waveform | Proprietary low-frequency waveform; contracts muscle without painful fatigue | Typically square-wave, tuned for sensory response |
| Availability | Prescription only | OTC or prescription, by model |
VEINOPLUS® vs. Pneumatic Compression (IPC/SCD)
Pneumatic compression squeezes the limb from the outside with inflatable sleeves. VEINOPLUS® works from the inside by activating the patient's own calf muscles. Providers often view the two as complementary.
| VEINOPLUS® | Pneumatic Compression | |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Internal – electrical stimulation engages the body's natural muscle pump | External – sleeves cyclically inflate and deflate against the limb |
| Setting | Home, office, or travel; about 60 minutes per session | Hospital, post-op, or home; seated or lying, often tethered to a pump console |
| Portability | Pocket-sized unit, two adhesive electrodes | Semi-portable sleeves to stationary consoles, by model |
| Typical use case | Mobile patients prescribed circulation therapy or post-surgical calf stimulation | Immobile or hospitalized patients needing continuous mechanical VTE prophylaxis |
VEINOPLUS® vs. Compression Stockings
Compression stockings apply passive, graduated pressure and work best while walking. VEINOPLUS® actively contracts the calf muscles even while seated. The two are frequently prescribed together.
| VEINOPLUS® | Compression Stockings | |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Active – stimulated contractions increase local blood circulation | Passive – elastic pressure; relies on the wearer's own movement |
| Works while seated | Yes | Most effective during walking and activity |
| Ease of use | Apply two electrodes, select a program | Can be difficult to put on; tight fit may limit compliance |
| Wear profile | About 60 minutes per session | Worn throughout waking hours; replaced as garments stretch |
VEINOPLUS® vs. Other EMS & NMES Devices
EMS/NMES is a broad category spanning fitness stimulators, rehab units, and disposable wearables. VEINOPLUS® is purpose-built for the calf muscle pump and vascular indications.
| VEINOPLUS® | General EMS / NMES | |
|---|---|---|
| Design focus | Calf muscle pump activation; FDA-cleared vascular indications | Varies – fitness conditioning, rehab, or short-term wearable stimulation |
| Waveform | Proprietary low-frequency waveform for full-session comfort | Varies by device; fitness programs prioritize training intensity |
| Device life | Reusable; built for long-term daily home therapy | Reusable rehab units to disposables replaced every few days |
| Cost structure | One-time device plus periodic electrodes | Disposable wearables carry recurring per-unit costs |
